Brian Bacon

We greatly regret to inform you of the untimely passing of our partner and colleague, Mr. Brian Bacon. Brian was regarded by many as the doyen of Cape Town patent practitioners, with over 50 years’ experience in patent practice. He was a true IP all-rounder, with a wealth of experience in both prosecution and litigation of all forms of intellectual property.In the field of patent prosecution, Brian has primarily acted for South African inventors in successfully prosecuting applications in a huge number of countries around the world. In litigation, Brian has acted extensively for both patentees and parties challenging patents.Brian commenced practising in 1959 at Haseltine Lake & Company in London. After qualifying as a patent agent in 1964, he moved to Canada, where he worked at Alan Swabey & Company in Montreal until 1966, when he returned to Haseltine Lake & Company as a partner. Brian came to South Africa in 1969, when he joined Adams & Adams in Pretoria. In 1979, Brian moved to Cape Town to set up Adams’ & Adams’ Cape Town office, where he practised until 1998, when he left to form his own practice.He is favourably mentioned in various rankings publications, including Chambers & Partners (2013), and Legal 500 (2013).
